The coolest yachts in the world: Jolie Brise

We ask top sailors and marine industry gurus to choose the coolest and most innovative yachts of our time. Yachting photographer Rick Tomlinson names Jolie Brise.

“This choice is made out of respect for the boat (and the crew)”, explains Rick Tomlinson. “There is nothing new in sailing, everything has already been done by someone. Pretty Breeze is over 100 years old but has a lot in common with the latest trends in yacht design – a long bowsprit, loosely furling headsails and a bighead mainsail (which is gaff supported rather than carbon slats).

“I photographed Pretty Breeze several times, but when skipper Toby Marris asked if I could take a photo of her rounding the Rock in the 2013 Fastnet Race, I expressed concern that they were probably spinning in the dark. His answer was: “No problem, we can sail a week before, take the pictures, then go back and race!”

This photo session was to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Pretty Breeze. She won the very first Fastnet race in 1925 and is still sailing constantly. Owned by Dauntsey’s School, her crew is made up of students who sail her regularly across the oceans.
